‘How are you going to get food?’ – the children in poverty in Oldham

Official figures show a rise in the number of children living in relative poverty in the UK.

4.1 million children now live in families earning less than £16,380 a year – or 60 per cent of the median UK income. More than two thirds of those children are in working families.

The Government says levels of absolute poverty have fallen and that the best route out of poverty is through employment.

The BBC’s Ed Thomas spent time with three families in Oldham struggling to buy food and basic necessities for their children.
